Geoff Ruderham

Geoff Ruderham is a Border lad through and through.

Raised in Hawick, the rhythms of the Borders have always been part of his story. Life, however, has a habit of sending us in unexpected directions and, as Geoff jokingly puts it, fortune – or perhaps misfortune – eventually took him away from his hometown and across to Edinburgh “for his sins.”

But no matter where life has taken him, the Borders have always remained home in spirit.

Radio has been part of Geoff’s life for more than three decades, and his love for broadcasting shows in the relaxed confidence he brings to every programme. His path into radio wasn’t the most obvious one either. Before the studio, Geoff worked as a cinema projectionist, part of a disappearing craft that once sat quietly behind the magic of the silver screen.

Like so many traditional roles, technology eventually changed that world too — but in many ways it helped steer Geoff further into the one place he always felt at home: radio.

Away from the microphone, Geoff is a family man, married to what he jokingly describes as “the current Mrs Ruderham of the last thirty odd years.” Together they have raised three children and share their home with a rather distinguished Russian Blue cat — though Geoff will happily admit the cat actually belongs to the gaffer.

If you chat with Geoff long enough, you will quickly discover another lifelong fascination: railways. In particular, he has a deep affection for the legendary Waverley Route and the modern Borders Railway, a reminder of the line that once linked the Borders to Edinburgh and the wider world.

It is just one more thread in the tapestry of stories and passions that occasionally find their way into his programmes.
